Hills Like White Elephants’ by Ernest Hemingway is a unique novel in that it is short but heavy, and ordinary but mysterious. And texts are composed of only dialogues of a couple in a restaurant. The word ‘Abortion’ never appears in this novel but it is a theme of the couple’s dialogue. This overall characteristics of this novel are represented as a design idea of the ‘Shell’ structure. By positioning texts inside of the folded pages and by spreading dialogues, these difficulties make readers read this book harder like solving puzzles.
